Government officials in China announced that Apple Inc is looking into opening flagship stores in two of China’s major cities, Chengdu and Shenzhen, despite the fact that Apple is still in dispute with a Chinese company over the use of the iPad trademark.
At the moment Apple has only five stores on the Chinese mainland, two in Beijing and Three in Shanghai. It is expected that the opening of the additional stores will be a big boost for Apple’s business in China.
But it won’t be smooth sailing for Apple in Shenzhen. Roger Xie, one of Shenzhen-based Proview Technology’s lawyers, says that if Apple begins to sell iPads there Proview will seek an injunction to halt them.
The lawsuit is now being fought in the Higher People’s Court in Guangzhou over who has the right to use the trademark of iPad. Proview says they own it, while Apple disputes this claim, saying that it is certainly theirs. According to Xie both sides are now involved in court-mediated negotiations.
