Headquartered in Mountain View, California, Intuit ranked 19th in CNN Money’s list of 100 best companies to work for. Well-known for its TurboTax and Quicken programs which help countless people file their income tax returns fast and as painlessly as possible, Intuit uses its corporate culture to inspire innovation and creativity. The company utilizes “idea jams,” which are formal rotation programs for newly hired staff and gives every worker four hours per week of “unstructured time” which they can use to work on projects of their own choosing.
Intuit was founded in 1983 by Scott Cook, who discovered Tom Proulx at Stanford to do the programming for Cook’s idea of bringing accounting to home computers. Together they struggled to get Intuit off the ground with Quicken, their first accounting program, which from the beginning had lots of competition to contend with.
When Windows 3.0 appeared in the early 1990s Intuit truly began to grow, spurred on by the first-ever rebate coupon offered by a software manufacturer which was included with the purchase. The coupon could be used to buy software in the store where the Intuit product was purchased, thus establishing loyalty by the retailers towards Intuit.
In 2010 Intuit had revenue of almost $3.5 billion, and employed almost 8,500 workers; more than 800 of them working in overseas offices. Here is what one employee had to say about working at Intuit:
“Love love love Intuit. I could write a book on what an awesome place this is. I feel very fortunate to be here…I thank my lucky stars every single day,” wrote Gaylan Sankey in January.
