College Graduates Struggle With Job Searches

A national survey recently revealed that although 2012 has seen some significant improvement, more than 50% of new college graduates will struggle to find work over the course of the next few months.

According to the Birmingham News, “Lack of jobs, not qualifications, is the top reason recent college graduates and post-graduates are unemployed and likely to remain so, according to the ‘Hiring of 2012 University/College Undergraduates and Postgraduates’ survey by the Society of Human Resource Management, a national trade group that has an active chapter in Birmingham.

The survey of human resource managers belonging to the group found that jobs calling for highly-skilled technical expertise, scientists, engineers, managers and executives remain the most difficult to fill.”

Mark Schmit of the organizations explained: “What do graduates today bring to the job? They’re likely to be savvy in technology. Still, they must improve basic skills/knowledge, such as English grammar and spelling, and applied skills, such as critical thinking, to best compete for jobs and transition into the ones they land.”

The employment situation amongst graduates is not surprising, considering the economy’s slow recovery from a devastating recession.

Associate professor Jeremy Thornton of Samford University has a similar outlook, and explained that “graduates need to be concerned even in the best of times when it comes to finding a job. The problem is that few people are hiring, and graduates are having to compete against past graduates as well. We’ve come up from rock bottom a few years ago, but the economy remains sluggish.”
