President Obama surprised a lot of people by choosing anthropologist and physician Dr. Jim Young Kim as the US contender to head the World Bank. His views on how to best develop economies, the mission of the World Bank, are not well-known; he is not a development scholar or a banker, or even an unofficial or secret foreign policy maker, unlike other previous presidents of the international bank.
Kim is however the president of Dartmouth College, and in an interview he described his vision for the World Bank:
“World Bank is a bank that’s focused on economic development and poverty alleviation,” Dr. Kim said. “I’ve spent my entire life working to invest in human beings and human communities, to help them move down the path of economic development.”
