Corbis, privately held by Bill Gates, is hoping to broaden its reach in the entertainment industry by launching an online music service featuring songs from the top four publishers. Corbis has provided images and videos for advertisers across the globe.
The new service, called Greenlight Music, has over a million songs from Warner Music, EMI Music Publishing, Universal Music and Sony ATV. It was launched in 2008, and has been up and running since Wednesday.
Bill Gates, famous for co-founding Microsoft, created Corbis in 1989. He purchased the rights to the ‘Mona Lisa,’ ‘Whistler’s Mother’ and other masterpieces, thus beginning to make a name in the arts and entertainment industries. His Greenlight Music project will provide customers with licenses to hundreds of songs for professional uses such as advertising and websites, expanding and transforming his business.
“Our customers want to connect to entertainment to break through the clutter so we decided to give them access to iconic entertainment,” explained Corbis CEO Gary Shenk. He gave an example, explaining that Hasbro Inc. used Corbis video clips for its online Trivial Pursuit game.
“It’s our responsibility to find new and innovative ways to help EMI’s artists achieve the success they always dreamed of,” said EMI’s Brian Monaco. “And we’re committed to finding ways to simplify the sync licensing process.”
